Artists’ statement:
The horse has touched me deeply for as far back as memory takes me, and tough I paint other subjects, the horse remains closest to my heart.
The sheer beauty of their movement holds me in awe, and from an early age I felt compelled to first draw, and later paint, them over and over again.
“Not Negotiable” is to show the character of this noble animal rather than what I consider to be the cruel practice of “buckjumping”. The rider is deliberately eliminated, the horse holding the viewers gaze…..
“I have willingly been a servant through the ages” he communicates – “I have courageously carried you into battle, I have staggered under heavy burdens for you, I have cleared and ploughed the fields and you have placed bets upon my great speed, but you may not try to break my spirit for I am obedient only to a kind master”
