Artist’s statement:

We are fortunate within the City of Whitehorse to have a number of bush parklands and wetlands, one of which, The Blackburn Lake Sanctuary, is close to where I live. We have watched the development and maintenance of this area by Council and voluntary expertise and labour over many years, and regularly experience enormous pleasure walking and observing the bird and plant life there. Ducks, cormorants, moorhens, coots, long necked tortoise, fish and yabbies are permanent inhabitants of the wetlands, with visits from Nankeen Night Heron and Pelicans; and the many wattles, wild flowers and resident birdlife in spring are an added joy.

Historically it is an area which has always attracted artists, particularly members of the Heidleberg School over a century ago. It is an oasis to refresh the spirit in our urban environment and much loved by local residents and visitors alike.
