Life for refugees is a struggle requiring great courage and humanity. ¡®Bearing Witness¡¯ is a testimony to a courageous Iraqi women, Amal Basry, who survived when the Gates of Hell opened up as the boat known as the SIEV-X capsized and sank on its way to Australia on October 19th 2001. Not content with surviving, Amal retold her story over and over so that the 253 victims, including 46 children, would not be forgotten in their ¡®flight to freedom¡¯. The perilous journeys of our forebears, along with the presence and wisdom of indigenous peoples, remind is to openly question ourselves, our state of justice, compassion and understanding of who we are as a nation. In this fifth anniversary of the sinking of the SIEV-X we will not forget this brave women who died of cancer on March 18th 2006. The journey of her life was a tragic irony - a mirror to our troubled times.
