Dots, lines, surfaces …and my cotton gloves.

Many people call me a “cotton glove artist.”I didn’t like this title at first. After all, I thought of myself as an artist -- with an insatiable propensity for creativity and innovation. As a young artist, I was always curious about the expression of the human body and the art of living. Cotton gloves were the perfect friends and the perfect tool to explore these themes.

Human hands hidden behind the cotton gloves were not only the most direct translation of the human body but also symbolized mankind and man’s internal conflict. These cotton gloves have fascinated me for the past 30 years. The charm resided in its simplicity and its humble representation of ordinary people.

“We come into life with empty hands and leave with empty hands,” someone once said.  Those empty hands tell stories of humanity.

The cotton gloves represent one layer that protects human beings - regardless of their race, social class, or financial status. They also symbolize the equality of human rights. The cotton gloves can reach those who can not hear and see the artist’s emotions and expressions.

My cotton gloves, which are three dimensional, became a great tool for media installations. From rice paper to canvas, my work extended beyond paintings.

Cotton gloves that were hand-dyed with heavy stitching, I expressed them three dimensionally. Cotton gloves that were exaggerated to scale into big and small, long and short, slim and fat, I expressed imaginative scales of an object.

Cotton gloves that were illustrated into two-dimensional gloves drawingsI enjoyed endless possibilities of its symbolic meanings.

With these cotton gloves, I imagine walking in the forest amid the fall foliage.

I imagine visiting the country side and looking at thatched-roof houses that hang bundles of soy bean paste. Through these imaginations, my “finding truth” exercises start with cotton gloves and its hand dyed colors.

In my imagination, I visit places like Las Vagas and throw brilliant colors on to the gloves. My thought process travels from East to West. When colors begin to talk to each other, I listen to the conversation and realize the universal truth of life using its colors.

Am I sucked into the black hole of cotton gloves? Was I dreaming of a milky way made of magnificent surfaces and dark reversed shadows?

Rules of existence -- that good and evil and heaven and hell exist at once -- create dots, lines and surfaces.  This most basic rule represents my cotton gloves and symbolizes the art of living.

These endless questions and the process of awakening is a gift from heaven to an artist. They are the beginnings of blessings and sufferings.
