The Star of David is an ancient Indian symbol, adopted during the Middle Ages by the Jewish people as their symbol, and consequently by the state of the Israel as the center of its national flag. Tattoo is a series of drawings and paintings of the Star of David which I painted in Israel from 2001 to 2005, before which I have been politically active for peace and for the demilitarization of the Israeli society. I then returned to my studio to produce this body of work, believing that political awareness maybe raised by art. Through painting this symbol I was dealing with my Israeli identity as a native Israeli, my Jewish and Zionist identities, and my identity as a daughter of Holocaust survivors. Possible Flag is one of the last pieces of the Tattoo series. As I was looking through my things at home while packing to move to the U.S, I found a Palestinian flag in a sack full of signs from the peace and anti-military demonstrations in which I participated. The flag was dusty, broken and partially torn, and I was about to throw it away with the rest of the sack, but I couldn’t. I hung the flag in my studio among hundreds of drawings and paintings of the Star of David, drew a small Star of David and “Chai” (“life” in Hebrew) in the middle, and put my Hebrew signature at the bottom. Possible Flag takes a deep look into one of the most complex and bloody conflicts in the world politics of our time, which has been a part of my life even before I was born. In the most fragile and even childish way, it suggests a visual possibility for reconciliation between long time enemies such as Israel and Palestine. |
