Artist statement

‘Fatima’ is a young woman’s true story. Fatima had to live with poverty as a child. This meant she had to leave her home country to earn money. Fatima was 17 when she went overseas to work as a nanny. The young baby in her care choked and died. Afterwards, Fatima was abused by the baby’s parents. She was sent to jail and now she is on death row. Children should be able to live in peace without such cruel punishments. I used dark colours and strong brush strokes in an abstracted style to show the distorted image of justice.

'法蒂玛'是一个真实的故事。她从小就得忍受贫困所带来的问题。她离乡背井到外地赚钱。17岁担任保姆工作时喂婴儿吃奶时，婴儿意外呛死了；她因此被送往监狱成为死囚。我画这幅画的目的是希望儿童能在和平中生活，没有这种残酷的惩罚。所以我以暗色调，强烈笔触和抽象的形式，以诠释[扭曲的公正]。

Bimba Dissanayake, a Graphic Artist from Victoria, Australia, was born in Sri Lanka in 1959. She completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the University of Kelaniya in 1982. From 1984 to 1994 she worked at Sri Lanka Television Corporation as an Animation and Graphic Designer. After moving to New Zealand, she completed a Diploma in Visual Communication in 1997. Currently, she is working at Arrow Bronze. Prior to this she worked at Bonza Collections, a folk art company.

Bimba is a very experienced artist, winning several honours and awards. She won the Hoso Bunka Special Recommendation Prize for the TV documentary ‘Nuns in Sri Lanka’ in 1985, First and Third Prize of the Sri Lanka Youth Service Art Award in 1983 and 1985, and First Prize (Art) in Ceylon Buddhist Students Federation. Bimba has had Solo Exhibitions and group exhibitions in Australia, Korea, New Zealand and Sri Lanka. She joined the International Women Artists’ Association Australia in 2004. Bimba specialises in oil, watercolour and drawing.

From a very young age she has wanted to be an artist. Both her mother, Rathnavali, also an artist, and her art teacher, Mrs Panditharatne, gave her enormous support to come this far.

彬巴蒂珊娜雅克她1959年出生于斯里兰卡。目前在澳大利亚维多利亚从事平面设计。1982年，考获Kelaniya大学美术学士文凭。 1984-1994年，在斯里兰卡电视公司担任动画及平面设计师。后来移居纽西兰，1997年完成视觉传播文凭课程。曾任职于Bonza收藏民间艺术公司。曾经多次获奖；1985年彬巴蒂珊娜雅克创作的电视纪录片-'尼姑在斯里兰卡'获特别推荐奖电视纪录片奖； 1983-1985获“斯里兰卡青年服务艺术奖- ‘冠军和季军及锡兰佛教学生联合会美术首奖 。

她也画油画和水彩，曾在澳大利亚，韩国，新西兰和斯里兰卡举行个展和联展。她是澳大利亚国际女艺术家协会会员。自小梦想成为画家的她能够完成自己的理想主要是有她的母亲，一位美术老师的大力支持和鼓励。
