NN Gallery proudly presents a group show of 3 Women Artists from 14th - 28th May 2005. The exhibition will showcase recent paintings by Katrin Förster, Karina Hubrich and Renee Kraal.

This exhibition presents works by 3 artists from three different backgrounds working with Oriental themes. From ideas of ancient beliefs, imagery and cultural sensibilities, these three women artists present a stylised synthesis of the essence of Eastern traditions and perceptions.

Katrin Förster, born in Germany but now resides in Malaysia, is an emerging artist who draws inspiration from the emotive expressions of nature. Her previous series of Anthereums, and Lotuses uses a harmonious arrangement of line and colour displaying a distinct iconic imagery.

In her latest series exploring Sea Lettuces, Katrin Förster uses a more impressionistic and spontaneous approach. Using the flower as a metaphor for life and the intrinsic qualities and symbolism of water for life, her paintings possess the idea of movement, growth and rebirth. With the use of gold ,black and white, her paintings are given a dramatic effect.

Born in Poland and currently living in Germany, Karina Hubrich, first exhibited her works in Malaysia at the group exhibition “Oceans and Other Images” at Gallery Petronas, Kuala Lumpur in 1999. Her most recent exhibition in Malaysia was held at the Tanjong Jara Hotel, Dungun, Terengganu. Karina, a lecturer at the Alauusaacademy of Arts in Bonn Alfter, Germany has exhibited throughout Europe, Egypt and China.

Her portrayals of the human figure and small portraitures delve into the classical techniques of Chinese scroll paintings. Coupled with contemporary concerns and sensibilities, her human forms are portrayed in a manner reminiscent of imperial courtiers of the Ming Dynasty, though this time without any embellishment nor regalia. As her figure beckons the notion of identity, of status and power, it is also a reminder of decorum and restraint.

Renee Kraal, born in Australia and presently residing in Kuala Kubu Baru, Malaysia, is one of the members of the illustrious Wednesday Art Group. In 1996 she was awarded the Rimbun Dahan Residency Programme and has worked on several collaborative projects with the Five Arts Centre, Ramli Ibrahim and on several book illustrations.

From her peaceful and contemplative existence, Renee pursues the understanding and interpretation of ancient religious teachings of the Seven Chakras. Influenced greatly by her experiences and her consciousness, organic, fluid forms and lines resembling the sun , moon and birds come alive. Her works indicate a spiritual existence in all things new and old and contemplates the need for compassion and peace.
